Visit Castelmola and discover one of the loveliest villages in Italy.
Castelmola (in Sicilian ‘a Mola) is an ancient medieval village a few kilometres from Messina. The old town is very impressive thanks to its perfectly preserved medieval urban planning, made up of picturesque narrow alleys and secluded squares, as if they were protecting small architectural gems, and ancient little churches. From the main square, you can admire the city of Taormina below, the Ionian coast towards Messina, and Calabria.
Here are the must-see attractions.
Don’t miss
Piazza Sant’Antonio
The panoramic Piazza Sant’Antonio is named after the church of the same name that overlooks it. From here you can take in breath-taking views. Look down to admire the beautiful mosaic paving, in white and lava stone.
The Castle
Castelmola owes its name to an ancient Norman castle that towers over the town and of which today only the ruins (still very picturesque) remain. Spectacular views can also be seen from the castle, especially at sunset.
Church of San Giorgio
There are many churches in Castelmola and many architectural styles. Near Piazza Sant’Antonio, you will notice the church of San Giorgio, with a tiny built-in bell tower. Behind the church, a wrought-iron ladder leads to a scenic terrace overlooking Taormina.
Church of the Santissima Annunziata
It was built in Norman times by Roger II of Sicily as a thank you to Our Lady for the help he received during the war against the Saracens. The church is open to the public during the first fortnight of August for the celebrations in honour of Our Lady.
Porta dei Saraceni (The Saracens’ Gate)
An ancient local stone construction that divides the municipalities of Taormina and Castelmola. During the Arab invasion, it was crossed by the Saracens who, after conquering the ancient Mola, headed to Taormina to destroy it.
