Visit the pools of Marinello and discover one of Italy’s most beautiful nature reserves.
If you are near the city of Messina, you should definitely take a few hours to explore the Marinello nature reserve, a spectacular and curious sand formation that contains small reflecting pools, where you can immerse yourself while admiring the Aeolian Islands on the horizon. Legend has it that the appearance of the pools of Marinello is linked to the story of a little girl who fell out of her mother’s arms but was saved by the sudden retreat of the waters that gave way to a blanket of soft sand, which cushioned her fall. In reality, this lagoon area was formed about a hundred years ago, due to particular weather-marine conditions.
Here are the must-see attractions:
Don’t miss
The Cave of Donna Villa
According to legend, the cave was home to an all-Sicilian Circe, a man-eater. You will need a guide and a lot of effort to reach it, but it’s worth it: the view from the cave is extraordinary.
The Sanctuary del Tindari
Located on the top of a steep promontory, the Sanctuary of the Madonnina del Tindari dominates the sea. It’s a long trek up on foot from nearby Oliveri to enjoy the extraordinary panorama.
The Greco-Roman Theatre of Tindari
Deep in the wilderness, which even today, is a natural setting for the many shows and concerts it hosts, especially in the summer. Don’t miss the surrounding archaeological area.
The Roman Villa of Patti
An important testimony of the late Roman era, with gardens, spas, and mosaics similar to those of Piazza Armerina. Excavations in this area are still ongoing. If you are a fan of archaeology, it is a must.
Oliveri
A few kilometres away from Marinello, you can also reach this delightful village with its crystal-clear waters and pebbly beaches by bike. It’s an old fishing village that’s perfect for a bit of relaxation.
