If you want to visit the heart of Sicily, you absolutely have to see Enna. This city brings together all the features that make this land unique. You can walk through the woods and stroll by the lake or explore the mysteries of medieval fortresses of the Norman era and, again, walk among ancient archaeological ruins.
You can get lost in the intertwining alleys on the plateau and find yourself on the balcony of the island, observing stunning views. Here’s everything you need to see and… don’t forget to taste the typical ‘fresculata’ (a kind of polenta).
Don’t miss
Cathedral of Enna
Built on the remains of the temple of Proserpina, it is located in the old town, going up the historic via Roma. There are more than 700 years of art history inside, and it has been declared a Place Peace by UNESCO.
The Tower of Federico II
The octagonal shape of this Norman tower represents the rose of the winds and, according to some sources, ancient astronomers would have made the entire Sicilian road system from here.
Lombardy Castle
History buffs will be fascinated by the Castle of Lombardy, the symbolic landmark of Enna. It is the largest and oldest medieval castle in Sicily and is one of the largest in Italy.
Lake Pergusa
It is the only natural lake in Sicily, as well as the only wetland for migratory birds. If you want to make friends with some cute owls, you can’t miss a visit to Lake Pergusa!
Rocca di Cerere
On this rock stood the temple of Ceres. Traces of a central altar, now gone, and two large incisions, in which the bottoms of statues of the goddess must have been embedded, are still visible.
