The ancient city of Forlì is a wonder, nestling between the Padana plain and the Romagna hills that sweetly drop away towards the Adriatic. The evocative atmosphere of its typically medieval old town will take your breath away.
Don’t miss
Old Town
The Duomo or Chiesa di Santa Croce is glorious. Founded in the 12th century and gradually enhanced, it is one of the main churches in the city. But it is Piazza Aurelio Saffi that is the historical heart of Forlì: here you can see Palazzo del Podestà, the Municipio and the ancient Chiesa di San Mercuriale, which preserves the frescoes by Palmezzano, the sepulchre by Barbara Manfredi and the magnificent wooden choir in the apse, inside. The Campanile (bell tower), the city’s most characteristic monument, stands next to the church.
Rocca di Ravaldino
Also known as the Rocca di Caterina Sforza, it is a fortress that today hosts numerous cultural events. It is one of the most evocative monuments of the medieval city and is a wonder to behold both inside and outside.
Food
Like all of Romagna, Forlì also has an excellent food and wine tradition. From lasagne to Pan Speziale (a traditional cake made at Christmas time), the city offers dishes that will satisfy the fussiest of palates.
Parco Franco Agosto
Just behind the old town is the lovely city park, Parco Franco Agosto, named after the first mayor of the liberated city. It’s a real oasis of calm and tranquillity of more than 20 hectares. Heaven for children and sports lovers, it’s an unmissable stop on your trip to Forlì.
